William Torrey Harris (1835–1909)

William Torrey Harris was an American educator and philosopher. As the superintendent of the St. Louis school system, he established the first public kindergarten in the United States. He served as the U.S. commissioner of education from 1889 until 1906. He founded and edited the Journal of Speculative Philosophy (1867-1893) and introduced Hegel and the German philosophic movement to Americans. Harris was the author of more than 500 publications including Hegel's Logic. He was also the editor of the 1910 edition of the Webster's New International Dictionary.
