Charles H. Haswell (1809-1907)
Charles Haynes Haswell was the first engineer in the United States Navy and was responsible for the introduction and improvement of steam engines in Navy vessels. He later spent many years as a consulting civil engineer in New York City. Haswell was probably best known for writing the "Mechanic's and Engineer's Pocket Book" (1842) which became known as "The Engineer's Bible, " as well as many other professional publications.
