Young Spinner in the Whitnel Cotton Mill
This girl was only fifty-one inches tall. She had been working in the Whitnel cotton mill for one year when this photograph was taken by Lewis Hine. Sometimes she worked at night, but she only made forty-eight cents a day. When asked how old she was, she hesitated, then said, "I don't remember," then added confidentially, "I'm not old enough to work, but do just the same."
