George Washington and Christopher Gist Crossing the Allegheny River
In 1753, at age 21, Washington was on a mission from the Ohio Company of Virginia to warn the French against interfering with their plans to colonize the Ohio valley. Christopher Gist was his guide. Their raft almost collapsed crossing the icy Allegheny. It was engraved c. 1856 after a painting by Alonzo Chappel.
