The 1880 Convention was held in Chicago. This illustration, from "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper," July 31, 1880, shows delegates and galleries cheering the nomination of General Winfield Scott Hancock. In the same year, the Republicans nominated James Garfield, who became the twentieth president.
