The Assassination of President Garfield

This is a detail of a front page illustration from "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper "(see Picture History Iteem # 20.171). It shows a stricken President James Garfield lying on the ground, supported by a woman. Secretary of State James Blaine stands beside them. The illustration, by Arthur Berghaus and Charles Upham, appeared in the July 16, 1881 issue of "Leslie's."
