This is a painting of Black Hawk, who was the Chief of the Sauk and Fox. In 1832, Black Hawk's crossing of the Mississippi led to Abraham Lincoln's military service. In this painting, the Native American chief wears a wampun necklace and a medal bearing the photograph of an unnamed government agent.
