"Washington at Lake Drummond, Dismal Swamp"
In 1763, George Washington explored and surveyed the the Great Dismal Swamp which is in North Carolina and Virginia. Washington had a 5,000 acre share in The Dismal Swamp Land Company and hoped to drain it and farm the land. After the Revolutionary War, when this scheme proved unworkable, he produced shingles and other wood products out of the swamp forest. This 19th-century engraving is by McNeven and S. V. Hunt.
