"Grand National Republican Banner"
This banner was made for the 1876 presidential election; it shows Rutherford B. Hayes from Ohio as Republican candidate for president and William Wheeler from New York as candidate for vice president. Surrounding both portraits are laurel wreaths. Between the two men is a cornucopia and below are two bundles of fasces. Above is a bald eagle flanked by American flags. Above this are the words "Liberty and Union." As future president, Hayes promised not to seek a second term, so as not to be overly influenced by patronage. He also stressed the need for reform of the civil service and the spoils system.
