"In Reality It was Different"
This cartoon was published in "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" in January, 1877, while the results of the 1876 election were still being contested. A Southern soldier offers Rutherford B. Hayes election returns from the contested states of South Carolina, Louisiana and Florida, handing them to him on the end of his bayonet. In the cartoon, Hayes refuses to take the votes, but in reality he accepted them, and became the next president.
