"Another Such Victory and I Am Undone"
This cartoon by Thomas Nast, made in March 1877, shows an injured elephant wrapped up in bandages. The elephant represents the Republican party after the hotly contested election of 1876, which did not produce a final result until the following March. It was the Republican candidate, Rutherford B. Hayes, who was finally announced the winner.
