Rutherford Hayes Takes the Oath of Office

Chief Justice Morrison R. Waite administers the oath of office to Rutherford B. Hayes. The usual inauguration day, March 4, fell on a Sunday in 1877. Because of the long dispute over the election results, President Grant felt that it was prudent to inaugurate Hayes as soon as possible. Therefore a private inauguration took place in the Red Room of the White House on the evening of Saturday, March 3; it was attended by Hayes, Grant, Chief Justice Morrison R. Waite, and Grant's secretary of state Hamilton Fish. A second inauguration for the public, shown here, took place on Monday, March 5. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Waite on both occasions. This illustration was done after a photograph.
