President Hayes at a Clambake in Rhode Island

Rutherford B. Hayes regularly attended functions with fellow veterans of the Civil War. In June, 1877, he attended the annual reunion of the Grand Army of the Republic. There he met his old friend, Governor Van Zandt. This illustration from "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper " shows a clambake attended by Hayes and Van Zandt, and an estimated crowd of 20,000.
