The Republican Elephant
It was Thomas Nast who popularized the image of the elephant as the symbol of the Republican party, in 1874. In this cartoon, made two years later, the Republican elephant is shown trampling the two-headed Tammany Tiger. The two heads belong to Samuel J. Tilden, Democratic candidate for president, and his running mate, Thomas A. Hendricks.
