Andrew Jackson (1767-1845)
Asher B. Durand painted this portrait in 1835 while Jackson was president. "Old Hickory" was America's greatest living hero after his victory at the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. During his two terms as president, Jackson aggressively used the powers of the presidency, setting a precedent for later presidents to come.
