A French Political Cartoon from the 1830s
This French cartoon criticized the French government for bowing to Andrew Jackson's terms in the debt settlement with the U.S. government. The caption reads: "Qui paye ses dettes s'enrichit" or "He who pays his debts gets rich." This referred to the belief that the French government kept some of the debt money for itself.
