"Girl Wanted"
In this political cartoon by George Yost Coffin, David Bennett Hill (1843-1910) walks up to a large house, from which Grover Cleveland leans out of a window. A sign hangs on the house, reading "Girl Wanted." David Bennett Hill wears women's clothing as he comes with his references to apply for the position; his hat feathers read "I am a Democrat." Two quotes are printed on the right hand side. The top one, by Berander, reads "I care not who makes a nation's laws so long as I may make it's (sic) songs." The other is a popular American ballad, which starts "And now she's living up a little higher; No more she's got to monkey with the fire." Hill was New York governor after Cleveland.
