"The Political Circus Leap"
This cartoon from "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper " refers to the race for governorship of New York in 1882. A row of four elephants are lined up for a trick in which contestants must jump off a springboard over the elephants. Grover Cleveland (standing with arms folded) is the Democratic contender. Charles J. Folger (on the spring board) is the Republican contender. As Folger prepares to jump he remarks, "That last elephant makes it a pretty tough job." The three small elephants are called "County Democracy," "Irving hall," and "Regular." The last, and largest, of them is the "Tammany Jumbo." The successful jumper lands in the governor's chair, on the far side of the elephants.
