Christian and the Slough of Despond

This political cartoon has James Garfield in the guise of Christian in "Pilgrim's Progress," the allegorical tale by John Bunyan. The weight that Christian/Garfield carries on his back is labeled "329." This is a reference to the Credit Mobilier scandal, in which Garfield was charged with receiving a bribe in the amount of $329. This cartoon was printed in "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper," October 16, 1880, a month before Garfield won the presidential election.
