James Garfield on his Inauguration Day
This scene takes place in the midst of the inaugural procession, on March 4, 1881. A group of ex-Confederate soldiers from Virginia broke through the crowd waving the Union flag and cheering incoming president James Garfield and outgoing president Rutherford B. Hayes. This illustration appeared in the March 26, 1881 issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper.
