"Monroe Before the French Assembly"
In 1794, James Monroe was appointed Minister to France by George Washington. However, he was recalled two years later because of his lack of support for Jay's Treaty, which the United States had recently signed with Great Britain. The treaty attempted to settle trade differences and negotiate peace between the two countries. Monroe refused to defend the treaty against French objections.
