"Remains of President Monroe Lying in State at the City Hall, July 3, 1858"

The public came to view the remains of President James Monroe's body at the City Hall, New York City in 1858. Monroe had died at his youngest daughter's house in New York City on July 4, 1831. In 1858, his remains were disinterred for reburial in his native state of Virginia. This engraved illustration appeared in the July 17, 1858 issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper .
