"General Zachary Taylor. The Hero of Buena Vista"
This portrait of Zachary Taylor is set during the Mexican War. At Buena Vista, early in 1847, Taylor and his reduced army of about 6,000 defeated General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army of 20,000 in a two-day battle. General Taylor's popularity surged in this and other Mexican War victories, and in 1848, he was elected to be twelfth president.
