"Brigadier General Z. Taylor. Commander of the U.S. Forces on the Rio Grande"

This lithograph shows Zachary Taylor in full uniform on a horse. Taylor points into the distance with his right arm. The opening battle of the Mexican War was the Battle of Palo Alto, on May 8, 1846. President Polk signed the Congressionally-approved declaration of the existence of war with Mexico on May 13. This lithograph was engraved and published by J. Baillie. Underneath the lithograph is written "Deposited in the Clerk's Office for the So. Dist. of New York Jun 1, 1846."
