"Things as They Are"

In this political cartoon, a newly elected President Zachary Taylor stands front of the U.S. Capitol criticizing the outgoing Polk administration. He watches former president James K. Polk and five others fly through the sky in the form of birds towards California. Polk carries a sack labeled "Secret Service 3,000,000." Taylor addresses a man who aims a cannon at the flock of birds, "Hold on Capt Bragg Dont waste your 'Grape.' it is nothing but a Shide-Polk. Our extra Session shall regulate California." These lines are a reminder of one of Taylor's famous orders at the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican War. Meanwhile, the bottom of the cartoon depicts violence in the California gold rush.
