"Congressional Scales, A True Balance"

This political cartoon is a satire on President Zachary Taylor's attempts to balance Southern and Northern interests on the question of slavery in 1850. Taylor stands on top of a pair of scales with a weight in each hand. The weight in his left hand is labeled "Southern rights"; the weight in his right hand is labeled "Wilmot Proviso." This lithograph was engraved and published by Nathaniel Currier.
