Chester Arthur (1829-1886)
Chester Arthur was the twenty-first president. He was sworn in on September 20, 1880, the day after James Garfield died from gun wounds received on July 2, 1880. Despite the fact that Arthur came from machine politics, his administration was honest and efficient. He vigorously fought the spoils system while in office. The writing above the image of Arthur says "Chester A. Arthur, President of the United States (No.2.)"
