President Garfield Views the Ocean at Elberon

In this front cover illustration from "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper," October 1, 1881, Garfield reclines from a bed beside a window overlooking the ocean. His wife Lucretia sits beside him and holds his hand. Garfield died on September 19, 1881 from gun shot wounds inflicted by the assassin Charles J. Guiteau.
