Polk's Inauguration

This engraved scene from Polk's inauguration appeared as an illustration in the "IIlustrated London News." "The crowd collects in the rain for Polk's inaugural. On the platform Samuel F. B. Morse tapped out the first 'live' play-by-play account of a swearing-in, for the benefit of listeners in Baltimore. Evidently, Polk's was the first inaugural at which 'Hail to the Chief,' an ancient Scottish air, was performed--then as now by the Marine band."
