David Wilmot (1814-1868)

David Wilmot was an antislavery politician from Pennsylvania who authored the ‘Wilmot Proviso’ which declared that slavery should be excluded from any territory the United States acquired. He served as a Democratic congressman from 1845-1851 and then helped to found the Republican party and served as a U.S. Senator from 1861-1863.
