George Bancroft (1800-1891)

George Bancroft, a U.S. historian, public official and diplomat, served as the secretary of the navy (1845-46), and established the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. As acting secretary of war, he sent General Zachary Taylor into Mexico. Bancroft also served as the U.S. minister to England (1846–49) and Prussia (1867-1874).
