John A. McClernand (1812-1900)
John Alexander McClernand, a Democratic politician and soldier, served as a U.S. congressman from 1843 until 1851. He was again elected to the U.S. Congress in 1859 but resigned in 1861 when he was appointed brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army. McClernand became a major general in 1862 after Fort Henry.
