George M. Dallas (1792-1864)

George Mifflin Dallas was the vice president under James Polk (1845-49). Prior to that he had been mayor of Philadelphia (1828-29), U.S. senator from Pennsylvania (1831-33), attorney general of Pennsylvania (1833-35), and U.S. minister to Russia (1837-39). He was also the U.S. minister to Great Britain (1856-61). The city of Dallas, Texas, was named after him.
