Augustin Daly (1838-1899)
Augustin Daly was a playwright and theater manager and director. He began by translating and adapting European plays. "Under the Gaslight" (1867) was his first important original play. Eventually, he wrote or adapted approximately ninety plays that were produced on stage. In 1869 he formed his own company and developed many famous actors. He opened Daly's Theatre in New York in 1879. Daly was also well-known for his critically hailed Shakespeare productions.
