Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1822-1888)
American book illustration can be said to have begun with Darley, who illustrated more than 300 books and countless magazine articles for such publications as "Harper"'s and "Appleton"'s. He illustrated Washington Irving's works. Darley set the standard for design and the integration of image and text.
