Charles Devens (1820-1891)

Born in Massachusetts, Devens was a soldier, jurist, and cabinet officer. He sat for two terms in the Massachusetts Senate. During the Civil War, he steadily advanced to the position of major-general. In 1873 he was appointed to the supreme court of Massachusetts. He served as attorney general under President Hayes. This print shows Devens in uniform and wearing his hat out-of-doors.
