Samuel Francis DuPont (1803-1865)

DuPont rose quickly through the ranks of the U.S. Navy. The Civil War began and, on taking Port Royal, SC, DuPont was promoted to rear admiral in 1862. His squadron captured Beaufort, SC, Fort Pulaski, GA., Fort Clinch, FL., and several other key sites. Against his wishes, he was ordered to take the ironclad New Ironsides to attack the defenses of Charleston in 1863. He suffered a severe reverse: it was the worst naval defeat of the Civil War. Angry that no one had listened to him, DuPont asked to be relieved and was replaced by Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren.
