Robert Fulton (1765-1815)
Artist, engineer, inventor, Fulton took up the improvement of the steamboat in 1802. He constructed a flat-bottomed craft with side wheels, powered by his imported low-pressure, coal-fired steam engine. In 1807 the "Clermont" made its famous trip from New York up the Hudson to Albany and back again in five days. This reproduction is taken from the original painting by Alonzo Chappel.
