Robert Fulton (1765-1815)
Artist, engineer, inventor, Fulton took up the improvement of the steamboat in 1802. He constructed a flat-bottomed craft with side wheels, powered by his imported low-pressure, coal-fired steam engine. In 1807 the "Clermont" made its famous trip from New York up the Hudson to Albany and back again in five days. The statue was made by M. J. Seelig and Company of Williamsburgh, Long Island, New York. It was erected at the Fulton Ferry House in New York.
