General William Henry French (1815-1881)

Born in Baltimore, French went into service in 1837. In the Mexican War he reached his captaincy (1848). During the Civil War he was promoted to major in the regular artillery and brigadier general of volunteers. In 1862 French was appointed major general of volunteers. Then he was blamed for the failure of Mine Run. In 1864 French was mustered out of the volunteers and saw no further field service.
