Jessie Benton Fremont (1824-1902)

A writer, Jessie Benton Fremont was the daughter of Senator Thomas Hart Benton, who educated her. She married John Fremont in 1841. Jessie worked with her husband on his vivid reports of his explorations. She made the dangerous trip to California to live in San Francisco with her husband, and wrote a book about her journey. During their financial difficulties, Jessie began to earn money by writing articles, travel sketches, historical sketches, and children's stories. She helped Fremont write his "Memoirs."
