Sir John Franklin (1786-1847)
A British explorer and an English rear admiral, his ill-fated expedition in 1845 is credited with having proved the existence of the Northwest Passage. Franklin's two ships became trapped in the ice in Victoria Strait, September, 1846. By April, 1848, Franklin and twenty-three others had perished there. In 1857 a search mission found the skeletons of the crews and a written account of the expedition.
