Asher Brown Durand (1796-1886)
Durand was an engraver and painter. In 1820 John Trumbull commissioned Durand to engrave one of Trumbull's famous paintings and Durand's reputation was made. Later he turned his attention to painting. His style of landscape painting and his philosophy helped spread the Hudson River School.
