Junius Brutus Booth, Sr. (1796-1852)

An actor, Booth was born in London, where he made his professional debut in 1813. Booth appeared to cheering audiences first in Covent Garden, then in Drury Lane. The actor met flower girl Mary Ann Holmes, and they left for the United States where they had ten children - including actors Edwin Booth and John Wilkes Booth. Booth made his 1821 U.S. debut in Richmond, Virginia. Struggling with alcoholism and madness, he broke down on stage in 1829.
