Stephen Symonds Foster (1809-1881)
Abolitionist and reformer, Foster was born in New Hampshire. Rejecting a career in the ministry because he felt the church was not a genuine upholder of Christian principles, he tried to make a living as an anti-slavery lecturer. He was a close friend of William Lloyd Garrison. He married Abigail Kelley, abolitionist lecturer and pioneer in women's rights. Foster wrote an anti-slavery pamphlet in 1843, "The Brotherhood of Thieves," which went through more than twenty editions.
