James P. Foster (1827-1869)

Foster joined the Union Navy in 1846. He reached the rank of lieutenant in 1861 and lieutenant commander in 1862. In 1863 he was placed in command of the gunboat "Lafayette" and rendered valuable assistance during the bombardment and siege of Vicksburg.
