Alfred Ely (1815-1892)
Ely was born in Connecticut and moved to New York in 1835. Ely was elected as a Republican to the 36th and 37th Congresses (1859-63). While witnessing the Battle of Bull Run (July 21, 1861), he was taken prisoner by the Confederates and imprisoned in Richmond for six months. When released, he resumed the practice of law.
