The Side Wheeler Dictator in New York City

The sidewheeler "Dictator" docks in New York City, circa 1890. The Dictator was a sidewheeler or paddle wheeler used as a blockade runner during the Civil War. One of the few riverboats that was not destroyed by the Union forces, the Dictator made the postwar run from Charleston to Palatka, Florida, from 1865 to 1878. It advertised "a first class table and clean, comfortable staterooms."
