Julius Eichberg (1824-1893)

Eichberg was born in Germany and became professor of violin in Geneva. In 1857 he came to the United States and settled in Boston. As director of the Boston Museum, from 1859-1866, he became known as the first composer of American operas. In 1862 he wrote "The Doctor of Alcantara," which was followed by three operettas. In 1867 he became director of the Boston Conservatory of Music.
