Captain John H. Ferrell (1823-?)
Captain John Ferrell began as a riverboat captain but entered the Union Army as a private. At that time Ulysses S. Grant was looking for riverboat pilots and promoted Ferrell to Navy captain, assigned to the monitor USS Neosho. In 1864 Ferrell won the Medal of Honor at Bells Mill, Tennessee. Seeing that the Confederates had shot the ship's flag away, Ferrell left the pilothouse, took the flag and secured it while the ship was still under fire.
